In Florida sustainability and green sources of energy have become a major issue. With thousands of new resident every year the state needs to come up with some new ways to provide water and power for the huge influx of new residents arriving daily and all of the visitors that live in Florida seasonally. Florida will be the site of the largest solar energy plant in the world very soon with plans unveiled for a $2.4 billion project being done by Florida Power and Light. The solar thermal plant is a major effort by Florida Power to reduce CO2 emissions at the 300 megawatt facility. A Tampa Florida based company is also developing a major source of fuels for our vehicles. The company plans to build several ethanol plants in the state. With Florida Governor Charlie Crist announcing plans for a green fuels initiative to require the use of at least 10% ethanol fuels by state vehicles their timing could not be better. Florida is even considering using a plan developed in Oregon to tax vehicles based not on the fuel they consume but on the mileage that they travel. The plan would require a device to be installed in cars that would communicate with gas pumps to record the amount of mileage traveled and would tie into the cars odometer and calculate the tax accordingly.
